Buses must be properly regulated

Monday, September 6, 2010

I welcome the article in today’s Herald highlighting concerns expressed by many local authorities that bus firms are ‘abandoning’  rural areas in favour of more profitable inter-city routes. This is yet further evidence that the deregulated bus industry is failing to meet the needs of our communities. Over the past few months I have received numerous complaints from constituents about bus [...]

We must give children in care a fair chance in life

I am very concerned by the claims in today’s Audit Scotland report that many children’s care plans ‘lack clear action and long-term goals’, and that a ‘better understanding’ of costs is necessary to ensure services provide value for money. The report, entitled ‘Getting it Right for Children in Residential care’, reveals that children’s services across the [...]

I was delighted to join members of the Longriggend village association for the opening of their newly refurbished village hall.  I was joined on the day by my colleague, Councillor Tommy Morgan. The hall has benefited from a £38,000 makeover and now has a new kitchen, and disabled access.  The village benefited from funding from WREN and [...]

Roving Surgeries

Today I began my summer roving surgeries.  Too often a criticism that is made of politicians is that you only see them during elections.  I firmly believe that it is important to maintain strong contacts with the constituents I represent.  This is why, for the past few years I have held roving surgeries throughout my [...]

I have tabled a Parliamentary motion congratulating Airdrie & Coatbridge Sea Cadets on securing the TS Indefatigable Cup 2008 for being the Most Improved Sea Cadet Unit in the UK. This is only the third time the Cup has been awarded within the Sea Cadet Corps and therefore the group are rightly proud of their achievements. I [...]

Well, it’s that time of year again.  Lots of invitations to school shows.  My main dilemma is which ones to go to, as they often clash.  Each year I am more and more impressed by the standard of these shows. This year, Airdrie Academy put on Les Miserables.  It was a very ambitious undertaking and they [...]

I was delighted to meet with staff and pupils from Calderhead High in Shotts.  This is my old school and it was great to see the enthusiasm of the pupils during their visit. I am pleased that North Lanarkshire Council has recently decided to build a completely new Calderhead High School and that this will be [...]

I am very aware of the concerns of local people follwing the decision by the planning committee of North Lanarkshire Council to grant permission for a waste incinerator near Greengairs.  I have been contacted by community representatives from Greengairs, Glenmavis, Plains and North Airdrie, all of whom are very concerned about the effects of the [...]

Tonight I will be hosting an event in The Scottish Parliament to provide an update to MSPs on the Airdrie to Bathgate rail line.  Despite the very real problems faced by a relatively small number of people (see the post below) I remain very positive about this project. There is no doubt that over the coming [...]

I had an enjoyable time attending the Shotts Highland Games at the weekend.  This year marked the 60th anniversary of the games.  The games were an excellent showcase of Scottish culture and although the weather was a bit chilly this year,  it was an excellent and entertaining day out for all.
